electronic message signs
Portable Changeable Message Signs (PCMS) have a wide variety of applications in temporary traffic control zones including roadway, lane, or ramp closures, crash or emergency incident management, width restriction information and speed reductions. A PCMS should be used as a supplement to and not as a substitute for conventional signs and pavement markings. The primary purpose of a PCMS in temporary traffic control zones is to advise the road user of unexpected situations. |

The Standard PCMS is suited for highway use where the speeds tend to be higher. The larger sign face and text allow motorists traveling at higher speeds to read the message easier. Also, highways typically have more open space that can accommodate a full size trailer. |
The Compact PCMS is suited for urban areas with lower speed limits. Though the sign face and text display is smaller, the lower speeds of urban areas will allow the motorist to see and read the message. Also, urban areas are typically more congested and finding space to place a Standard PCMS can often times prove to be challenging. |
